Year 9 Options Process

From September of Year 9, students begin an exciting stage in their learning journey as they sample a wide range of option subjects from our broad and inclusive curriculum. This taster period allows students to explore new areas of study and gain first-hand experience before making their final choices. 

All students will continue to study English, Mathematics and Science as part of the core curriculum. In addition, they will have the opportunity to discover subjects beyond the Key Stage 3 offer, helping them make confident and informed decisions about their future pathways. 

 Introducing the Options Process 

The formal options process begins in February of Year 9 with an introductory assembly for all students. This is followed by a series of subject-specific assemblies from courses not taught at KS3, such as: 

• Film Studies 
• Psychology 
• Dance 
• Health Studies 
• Art–Graphics 
• Photography 

These sessions ensure students understand the content, expectations and progression routes of each subject before making their selections. 

 Options Evening 

Our annual Options Evening, held in March, provides an important opportunity for learners and their parents or guardians to speak directly with subject teachers. Staff are available throughout the evening to offer guidance, answer questions and support students in considering the subjects that best suit their interests, strengths and aspirations. 

The online options form is shared with families the following week. 

Making Choices 

Students are asked to choose four option subjects in addition to English, Maths and Science. Key requirements include:

• Students must choose History and/or Geography within one of the option blocks. 

We are proud to offer 21 option subjects, ensuring a broad, balanced and inclusive curriculum accessible to all learners. 

 Support and Confirmation 

Once option forms have been submitted, every student will take part in a one‑to‑one interview to ensure they feel fully supported and confident in their choices. Final option allocations are confirmed during the second half of the summer term.
