Performing Arts

At North Bromsgrove High School, the Performing Arts are well respected, and extremely well facilitated. Diversity is encouraged and all abilities are welcomed, on the BTEC courses, and throughout our extra-curricular programme.

Students can study both Dance and Drama at KS4 and 5, and have the opportunity to work with experienced practitioners with professional experience - in Dance, Acting, Musical Theatre and Television.

Performing Arts improves physical health, enhances emotional and cognitive development, and encourages socialisation, and creativity.

The BTEC Dance qualifications require dedication and excellent organisational and time-management skills. Students are introduced to many different styles of dance, research practitioners from different eras and backgrounds, learn how to perform and analyse professional repertoire, and devise their own performances in response to different stimuli.

We believe that students deserve a broad and ambitious Drama curriculum, rich in skills and knowledge, which immerses students in a range of styles. The curriculum will encourage students to become confident and independent thinkers, who will be able to create original work and critically analyse professional and non-professional repertoire. Students will have an appreciation of their own work and that of others, always demonstrating respect and empathy.

We study the following -

Dance

  • Hiphop (Zoonation, Boy Blue, Anthony Thomas, Black Skull Creative)
  • Jazz (Fosse, Robbins, Horton, Bennett, Drew McOnie, Gillian Lynne)

  • Ballet (Akram Khan, Chris Wheeldon)

  • Contemporary (Graham, Cunningham, Matthew Bourne)

Drama - Practitioners

  • Stanislavski
  • Brecht

  • Frantic Assembly

  • Augusto Boal

  • Vamos

  • Artaud

We are also extremely fortunate to have close links with leading practitioners from the Musical Theatre, Dance and Television industry - and with the top Performing Arts colleges in the UK. Students are given clear advice on career progression and take part in practical professional workshops.

We have a thriving Performing Arts extra-curricular programme, with our annual Musical as the highlight! Students can also join our Dance Company, Musical Theatre Glee Club, and take part in our Monologue Slam. We take students to London each year to watch West End shows and participate in workshops with West End performers.

We encourage students to work independently, and with their peers to achieve excellent standards. At North Performing Arts, students of all abilities thrive in a creative, focused, and secure environment.
