Worcestershire Measles Information

A national catch-up programme to increase MMR (measles, mumps and rubella) vaccination uptake in children and teenagers has been announced in response to the increase in measles cases nationally. The aim of the programme is to prevent measles outbreaks by vaccinating as many unvaccinated and partially vaccinated 10-16 year-olds as possible in time for the next school year.

In Worcestershire, 91 per cent of 5 year olds are covered by the MMR and currently the number of measles cases stands at less than 5 in the county. However, Public Health Consultant for Worcestershire County Council, Dr Ash Banerjee, says the percentage of people who have had the vaccination needs to rise to at least 95 per cent to stop local outbreaks happening.
