Maths success at a national level!

Maths success at a national level!

Twenty-nine A-Level Maths students at North Bromsgrove High School participated in the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge. The aim of this national Maths competition is to encourage mathematical reasoning, precision of thought, and fluency in using basic mathematical techniques to solve interesting problems.
The challenge consists of 25 multiple choice problems designed to make students think and be challenged. Most are accessible, with knowledge based on both GCSE and A-Level Mathematics knowledge, yet it also challenges those with more experience. Students were only given plain/lined paper and no calculators were allowed throughout the 90-minute paper-based challenge.

The students faced tough competition as they compete against schools across the UK and around the world. Two-thirds of the participants receive certificates. Gold certificates are awarded to the top 11% of all participants, silver goes to the next top 22% and bronze goes to the next top 33% at that is from not only the national figures but worldwide participants.

This year was the first time that both Year 12 and Year 13 students participated in the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge. Building on our success last year, the NBHS Maths department is pleased to announce that we have three silver and seven bronze certificates.

Congratulations go to all participants, with special recognition to Luke Galt [currently in Year 12 and doing both A-Level Maths and Further Maths] who achieved Silver and Best in School, with Ben Harvey and Adam James achieving silver. In addition, Harry Parslow, Owen Wood, George Bryan, Joseph Barnes, Dylan Betton, Ethan Jones, and Ben Smith have all achieved Bronze. These certificates will go well with their CVs and their plans for their next step ahead, whether it is university or a job for the future.

Ten house points are awarded to all participants, with the Gold and Silver participants receiving an additional ten house points.

In early February 2022, we will be inviting students from the top groups of Years 9, 10 and 11 to participate in the UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge - this is the KS4 version of the Senior Maths Challenge.

The NBHS Maths department is looking forward to seeing more success in the future!
