We want students to enjoy learning and achieve the grades that reflect their potential. Our broad and balanced curriculum reflects our values and is designed to be creative, engaging and rewarding. We offer a variety of qualifications, which meet national requirements and cater for all our students. Decisions about options choices are made through our Guided Pathways process – a range of events, guidance and support, allowing students and their parent(s)/carer(s) to make informed choices, which help set the foundations for future study or employment.
We recommend that students who have a specific career or vocation in mind, particularly those who wish to go to university seek advice from the school, their form tutor or the website www.ucas.com. Our inclusive and forward thinking Sixth Form should be the ambition for the vast majority of our students and our curriculum is built with this in mind.
We place a strong emphasis on students having the necessary skills they need to have ready for when they leave us. At the heart of our curriculum is a key focus on English and maths, with students receiving lessons in these vital subjects every day. Students must also study GCSE science and have non-examined PE and PSHE lessons as part of core national curriculum guidelines. Our Religious Education (RE) provision is provided through assemblies, specific tutor time input, external speakers and is interwoven through other subjects studied by students, such as English and PSHE.
Students start their GCSE study in September of year 9. A three-year GCSE programme means students only study options subjects they have chosen from the wide selection available to them. It allows students more time to develop and embed the skills and knowledge necessary for GCSE success. The decision to adopt a three-year GCSE programme followed extensive consultation with feeder middle schools, students and parents/carers and it has proven an extremely popular choice.
Full details of the process and the courses offered are available through downloading our Guided Pathways booklet for 2017-18 students. A list of courses available in each year group can be found by clicking here.
