At North Bromsgrove High School we believe that all of our students should be confident and competent readers. We want our students to embrace and enjoy reading so that they are able to access increasingly challenging texts and be exposed to reading for a variety of purposes. As a result, we have invested in the Accelerated Reader program to raise reading levels and embed a culture where students love reading.
The principle behind this program is to promote a lifelong love of reading in every student, regardless of aptitude or ability.
It is designed to do the following:
• Make essential reading practice more effective for every student.
• Personalise reading practice to each student’s current ability.
• Assess students’ reading skills through fun quizzes, so that intervention strategies can be brought in when necessary.
• Accelerate reading progress throughout the school.
What is Accelerated Reader?
Accelerated Reader is a computer program which helps North Bromsgrove High School staff to manage and monitor students’ independent reading.
How does Accelerated Reader work in school?
Initially, students will take a ‘STAR Reading Test’. This is a computer based reading assessment program, which uses computer adaptive technology. The questions continually adjust to students’ responses – if a student’s response is correct, the difficulty level is increased; if students answer incorrectly, the difficulty level is reduced. Students are then encouraged to read books within the level recommended by their Star test results. After reading the books, students will take a short quiz, which will assess how much they have understood. In addition to this, every book gives a points value. The points are based on the length of the book (number of words) and each student has a target number of points to collect through each half term. Awards will be presented to students who reach their targets. Students in Year 9 have a dedicated reading lesson in their timetable, which is in addition to their English lessons.
What is the Accelerated Reader Book Finder?
AR BookFinder is an exciting internet based book searching tool from Renaissance Learning which works alongside the AR program. With this free online tool parent(s)/carer(s) and students can search for books which are both interesting and at the appropriate level. This is a great tool to identify which books are already owned and are included in the Accelerated Reader program.
